Cross Country (B), Cross Country (G)

Jonathan Miller

By Kyle Gylsen

The Male Athlete of the Week is Jonathan Miller of the United North Central boys' cross country team.
During the season, Miller placed first at six events:  Northland/Remer Invitational (Deer River), Pequot Lakes Invitational, Mable Lake Invitational, Pillager Invitational, Deer River Invitational, and the UNC Invite.
He took home the Birch Tree Conference Championship and placed fourth at the Section 8A Championship, earning him a trip to the State Cross Country Meet at St. Olaf this coming weekend.
He also carries a 4.0 GPA.

"Jonathan has been running for us since he was in seventh grade," stated United North Central head coach Mark Houle.  "His work ethic is fantastic.  He is the type of student/athlete that makes us coaches look good.
"He never missed practice, but for a few times and those were due to or related to his academics.  He always was ready for practice and loved to be pushed at practice.  He knew the only way you get better is to work at it in practice and in the off season as well, and would do everything we asked.  He always looked for the challenge to make him better.  He led by example, which earned him the respect of his team members. He always knew he was part of the team and wasn't an individual."
In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Miller is also an outstanding student.  According to Houle, Jonathan scored the highest possible score on his ACT and PSAT, the Minnesota Standards, and they are waiting for his results on the SAT.  He was a key member of the Sebeka Knowledge Bowl Team that won the State Championship last year.  He is also involved with BPA, Choir, National Honor Society and other activities at his school.
"He is a very humble person," Houle added.  "We wanted to have a pep fest in his honor and he would have nothing to do with it.  His reasoning was that he was part of the team and an individual shouldn't be singled out regardless of how good you were.  And he really doesn't like all the publicity.
"I can't say enough about this young man, other than that it has been a privilege to work with him."
Jonathan is the son of Susan and Jerome Miller of Sebeka.
Congratulations to Jonathan Miller of the United North Central boys' cross country team, the Male Athlete of the Week.
