Coaches Seed Boys' Hockey Tournament

By MSHSL
St. Paul

Sixteen coaches sat at their computers Saturday morning and voted to determine the top four seeded teams in each class for the 2010 State Boys' Hockey Tournament.  When the tabulation was complete, Breck School of Golden Valley was chosen No. 1 in Class A and Minnetonka was chosen No. 1 in Class AA.

Each coach ranked the other teams 1 through 7.  The highest and lowest rankings for each team were discarded, leaving five rankings for each team.  From those rankings, the top four seeds were selected.  In conference calls with all eight head coaches of each class, League Associate Director Craig Perry announced the top four seeds.  League Director of Information Howard Voigt then blindly drew the names of the four remaining teams to establish the opponent for each seeded team.

The Class A tournament opens Wednesday, March 10, at 11 a.m. with No. 2 seed Mahtomedi (23-5-0) facing Alexandria (21-6-1).  The second game features No. 3 seed Hermantown (25-3-0) versus Virginia/Mt. Iron-Buhl (18-7-3).  The 6 p.m. evening session opens with No. 1 seed Breck School (26-2-0) playing New Ulm (16-9-1), followed by No. 4 seed Warroad (24-4-0) versus Rochester Lourdes (17-8-3).

The Class AA tournament opens Thursday, March 11, at 11 a.m. with No. 2 seed Edina (20-6-2) facing Roseau (22-5-1).  The second game will have No. 3 Blaine (21-4-3) playing Apple Valley (17-11-0).  The 6 p.m. evening session opens with No. 1 seed Minnetonka (25-1-2) versus Lakeville North (11-15-2), followed by No. 4 seed Hill-Murray of Maplewood (25-2-1) challenged by Duluth East (19-5-4).
