The SportsCow.com Male Athlete of the Week is Michael Ward of the Pequot Lakes boys' basketball team.
Ward became the seventh Patriots' boys' player to score at least 1,000 points in their career when he drained 18 points on February 16 in a 67-35 victory over Duluth Marshall.
He scored 15 points his freshman season, led the Patriots with 412 as a sophomore and added 347 last season.
Through 22 games this season, Ward has 247 points. He is second on the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 11.2 points and 5.7 boards per game.
The fact that he is playing basketball at all this season, let alone at such a solid level, is amazing after he suffered cardiac arrest during a basketball practice with teammates at the Pequot Lakes High School on June 2.
"Michael has been a three-year starter for us," said Patriots' coach Garry Grewe. He has been a consistent force in the paint for us during this time. Michael also is an honor student and is an excellent role model for you younger players."
